How We Can Help

A number of schemes offer financial help to landowners for the sympathetic management of land containing ancient monuments. These schemes include DEFRA's Environmental Stewardship amongst others. We can advise on the suitability of your land for any such schemes, and can help you with applications.

We can supply you with information based on the Northumberland Historic Environment Record that can help in locating and describing all known sites and finds on your land. Many sites have been discovered through aerial photography and you may have some which you have never even recognised on the ground.

Detailed surveys of ancient monuments can often uncover interesting information about the history of a farm. We can sometimes commission archaeological surveys, either of single monuments or extensive landscapes.

We can advise on the best methods of site conservation and management, and in some cases will draw up a management plan for either an individual site or a whole farm. Management plans can usually be designed to ensure the protection of archaeological remains while having only minimal, if any, impact on the day to day running of a farm.

If you wish to undertake any works near a scheduled ancient monument then we can advise you on the legal implications. In some cases we may be able to obtain scheduled monument consent on your behalf.

We can also advise on potential sources of grant aid from such sources as English Heritage to help with the management and protection of various aspects of the Historic Environment.
